Over the last decade of working with some of music’s top producers, recording artists, and songwriters, I started noticing similar personality traits and habits of highly creative people. These professionals possessed a certain mindset that allowed them to perform at a high level and do it effortlessly. Their personal habits funneled their energy into a kind of creative vortex. I’ve listed 7 of these habits here. There are certainly more, but these are the 7 that almost all of these pros had mastered.
1. Possess a positive mental attitude that is seen and felt.
Highly Successful Creative People spend little time complaining about the state of art or music today. They focus on what excites them, using this energy to inspire their own art. They find the lessons in failure and don’t brood. Rather than become bitter and jaded, they use their disappointments to grow. Highly Successful Creative People spend little time blaming others or situations for their lack of success.
2. Pay close attention to the world.
People watching and conversation with others is a turn-on. They use the details they observe and hear to inspire their work.
3. Have someone they trust to give feedback.
Even the most gifted creatives need feedback from people they trust and respect. No one works in a vacuum. Mentors, creative colleagues, and editors all play a part of their successes.
4. Question everything.
Highly Successful Creative People don’t just accept the status quo, and often conduct their own investigation into everything around them. They want to know WHY?
5. Create the environment.
Their work place fosters creativity, limits distractions, and gives them the best chance to create something meaningful.
6. Join forces to become a force.
Surrounding themselves with a team makes sense to the Highly Successful Creative Person: managers, agents, supportive friends, and other highly creative people.
7. Dare to dream big.
They pay little attention to the odds and naysayers, always in relentless pursuit of the impossible.
