Let SongTown Protect You Against Songwriting Scams

One of the reasons Clay and I started SongTown was to help people learn how the songwriting business works and immunize themselves from being ripped off by songwriting scams. So, I want to give you some advice that can help save you hundreds and maybe even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

If you heed this advice, you can make sure that you don’t get ripped off in the music business by people who are just waiting to prey on eager songwriters like you.

The key to your wallet are the words “Your songs are AWESOME!”

If you have been struggling to get something going with your music and all of the sudden, someone says “Your songs are AWESOME!”, beware. Legit people in the business almost never use that kind of praise. They have seen it all. They might say “You write really well.”, but they don’t act like you are the best thing since sliced bread. All of us songwriters are passionate about what we do and that makes us vulnerable to “over-the-top” praise.

The very thing that makes you a good songwriter makes you vulnerable to being taken advantage of. You are passionate and desperately want people to love your music. That gives the wolves enough blood to dive right in. Learn to separate your business side from your creative side. The business side of your brain has a better “scam meter”.

Education is the key to protecting yourself against songwriting scams.

If you know how much a demo should cost ($450-850 is the current standard), then you can avoid falling for someone offering you a $2500 special. The most I have ever paid is $1000, if that puts things in perspective. We have TONS of resources to help you learn how the business works and how to tell if something is legit or not.

Ask questions.

It breaks our hearts to hear people bemoan falling for a scam and they say “I just didn’t know.” In SongTown, you have professional mentors who have been successful in the business for many years. And you can ask us ANY question. There is no reason to fall for something that seems shady when you have pros who are ready and willing to help you avoid songwriting scams.

In SongTown, you have every resource you need to help you navigate the shark infested waters of the music business. Take advantage of them and protect yourself against the scam artists.
