Every week I see determined hardworking songwriters flocking to pitch to publisher events to play their songs for publishers. I see whole businesses existing on this model of setting up pitch to publisher events. I’ve seen it for 25 years! While there might be some networking potential to find co-writers, etc, I have not heard of songs being picked up at one of these events by a publisher and becoming a big hit… or being recoded by a major artist. Still the events are continuing year after year, week after week.
So how do writers get noticed in the business?
By writing incredible songs. Writing songs better than the artists can write themselves. By writing songs better or different than the staff writers at the publishing companies can write. Ask ANY successful writer and this is their answer.
That why SongTown focuses 95% of it’s energy helping writers become better writers. Because in the real world of songwriting, what pro writers did to get noticed, and to keep being noticed is to keep working on their craft.
This is why Marty Dodson and I do the 6 week songwriting Masterclass every January online. To get writers focused on what they need to be focused on. To give them the tools to gain momentum as a songwriter. This is why four of our former Masterclass students signed staff writing deals in 2016.
Why do pitch to publisher events not work for a songwriting career? Because many writers are placing the majority of their efforts in the wrong areas. It’s not about being heard by the right people…
It’s about raising your craft to a high level where you can’t be ignored!
If you are ready to do something really good for your writing, join us this year for the SongTown 6 week MasterClass. We’ll get better at writing together!
