Step Inside an Artist Camp — and Work Online with Recording Artists
Learn what it feels like to write songs for an artist from the inside...
instead of standing on the outside of their camp looking in!
What is an Artist Camp?
Many artists work with a team of trusted writers and producers that end up creating much of their music on an album. We call that their "camp."
SO....
SongTown's "Artist Camp" Songwriting Course is a 3-week online course where you work with closely with a recording artist on your next song—start to finish. You’ll learn the in's & out's of the "artist-camp workflow" and write a song for a specific artist.
Four recording artists—Morgan Johnston, Jeffrey East, Jordan Rager, and Eric Burgett—will review your ideas, choose you for their teams, and give you direct feedback and notes each week on your song.
Think The Voice, but for songwriting: they’re coaching your song, not your vocals.
How It Works :
Week 1 — Draft Night & Concept Shaping
-
Live Draft: Artists hear 3 titles from each attendee and draft you + 1 title to develop.
-
Two-Angle Pitch: Within 48 hours, submit 2 distinct angles on your drafted title
(each angle = 1–2 sentence concept, chorus landing line, vibe/tempo reference). -
Artist Feedback: Your artist responds with feedback: POV, emotional target, “do more of this,” and “avoid that.”
Deliverables: 2 angles + quick rationale for each (what makes it artist-fit).
Week 2 — Write the Song (V1)
- Live class with Marty & Clay with pro tips and Q&A
-
First Draft: Write Version 1 guided by your artist’s notes.
Include a lyric sheet + simple worktape (phone voice memo is fine). -
Artist Review: You’ll receive a punch-list of suggested fixes).
Deliverables: V1 lyric and/or melody
Week 3 — Re-Write & Final Delivery (V2)
- Live class with Marty & Clay with pro tips and Q&A
-
Revision Pass: Address the punch-list and refine hook, melody contour, and clarity.
-
Polish: Tighten prosody, cut filler lines, align section energy, and confirm artist-brand fit.
-
Final Review: Post Version 2 for final artist comments and light tweaks.
Deliverables: V2 lyric and/or melody

Jeffrey East
Jeffrey East is a Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and producer originally from Dale (formerly Lockhart), Texas. Raised performing in his family’s band, he moved to Nashville in 2006 to pursue music seriously. He signed his first publishing deal with Harley Allen in 2006 and now writes for Zavitson Music Group. Jeffrey has penned songs for a star-studded roster—including Tim McGraw, Matchbox Twenty, Rascal Flatts, Eli Young Band, Dierks Bentley, and more—and launched his own recording career in 2015. Whether behind the mic or behind the pen, he brings soul and storytelling to every project.
Morgan Johnston
Morgan Johnston is a Cape Cod–born, Nashville-based pop-country artist known for her heartfelt songwriting and powerful vocals. Since moving to Music City in 2016, she’s opened for artists like Lainey Wilson and Dustin Lynch, landed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell, and earned viral success with “Like It’s His Job.” Recent singles like “Heaven Knows” and “A Woman” showcase her honest storytelling and rising impact in country music.
Jordan Rager
Jordan Rager is a rising young country singer-songwriter from Loganville, Georgia—now based in Nashville. He taught himself guitar at 15, launched his career performing in local bars, and gained wider attention with a run on The Voice before being mentored by Barry Williams (Jason Aldean’s dad). Signed to Broken Bow Records, he scored his debut single “Southern Boy” (duet with Jason Aldean) in 2016 and later released “Now That I Know Your Name” and “One of the Good Ones” under Riser House Records.
Eric Burgett
Eric Burgett — a classically trained pianist turned country storyteller — brings the piano front and center in modern country music. Born and raised on a farm in Latham, Illinois, he cut his teeth playing hymns in church and tunes at his parent’s tavern, The Korn Krib. Now based in Nashville, Eric has racked up over 22 million global streams, landed multiple Top 30 hits on the Music Row CountryBreakout chart, and earned editorial spots across major platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora.
