What is an Artist Camp?

Many artists work with a team of trusted writers and producers that end up creating much of their music on an album. We call that their "camp."

SO....

SongTown's "Artist Camp" Songwriting Course is a 3-week online course where you work with closely with a recording artist on your next song—start to finish. You’ll learn the in's & out's of the "artist-camp workflow" and write a song for a specific artist.

Four recording artists—Morgan Johnston, Jeffrey East, Jordan Rager, and Eric Burgett—will review your ideas, choose you for their teams, and give you direct feedback and notes each week on your song.

Think The Voice, but for songwriting: they’re coaching your song, not your vocals.

How It Works :

Week 1 — Draft Night & Concept Shaping

  • Live Draft: Artists hear 3 titles from each attendee and draft you + 1 title to develop.

  • Two-Angle Pitch: Within 48 hours, submit 2 distinct angles on your drafted title
(each angle = 1–2 sentence concept, chorus landing line, vibe/tempo reference).

  • Artist Feedback: Your artist responds with feedback: POV, emotional target, “do more of this,” and “avoid that.”

Deliverables: 2 angles + quick rationale for each (what makes it artist-fit).

Week 2 — Write the Song (V1)

  • Live class with Marty & Clay with pro tips and Q&A
  • First Draft: Write Version 1 guided by your artist’s notes.
Include a lyric sheet + simple worktape (phone voice memo is fine).

  • Artist Review: You’ll receive a punch-list of suggested fixes).

Deliverables: V1 lyric and/or melody

Week 3 — Re-Write & Final Delivery (V2)

  • Live class with Marty & Clay with pro tips and Q&A
  • Revision Pass: Address the punch-list and refine hook, melody contour, and clarity.

  • Polish: Tighten prosody, cut filler lines, align section energy, and confirm artist-brand fit.

  • Final Review: Post Version 2 for final artist comments and light tweaks.

Deliverables: V2 lyric and/or melody

How We Work Throughout

  • Forum Cadence:

    • Week 1: titles + angles

    • Week 2: V1 (and optional midweek snippet)

    • Week 3: V2 + one-sheet

  • Collab & Feedback: Look for collaborators on your team. Give each other helpful/thoughtful critiques .

  • Artist Interaction: Keep questions in a single running thread per team for fast responses.
