Being realistic about your songs…
Clay and I talk to people every week who are obsessed with finding a publisher to hear their songs or a song plugger to pitch them. 99.9% of the time, those songs are not ready for a publisher or a song plugger. Why? Because they haven’t yet gained a realistic understanding of how their songs compare to the ones being cranked out by the pros.
Great songs don’t have to beg for attention…
We find ourselves reminding people over and over that a great song does not have to beg for attention. If you have played your songs for anyone in the industry and they didn’t jump up and down, you probably need to work at writing better songs before you take another meeting. If you have played a song for multiple people in the industry and didn’t get anyone excited, then you definitely need to write more better songs before you play them for anyone again.
When someone in the industry hears an undeniable hit song, they will pass it along to everyone they can get it to. Why? Because it makes them look good to give an artist a hit song. And, because most people in the industry truly love great songs. We get to hear so many average songs (or below average) that a hit song stands out like a sore thumb.
Why does SongTown pitch great songs we hear to publishers, producers, and artists?
When Clay or I hear a song that we believe could be a hit, we pass it along to publishers, artists, managers – anyone that will listen. We want to be the one to “discover” that hit song.
Beautiful things don’t have to ask for attention. They get it naturally.
If your songs haven’t been getting the attention you think they deserve and you have played them for multiple people in the industry, you should step back and take a long hard look at the feedback you are getting. More than likely, you still need to work on your craft and write better songs. That’s hard to hear, but it’s the truth. And, we are committed to giving you the truth here in SongTown. It’s the only way you will get better and have a chance at succeeding.
