I’ve now taken 3 melody masterclasses with Clay and 1 lyric masterclass with Marty. These guys not only know what they’re doing, they can actually teach others how to do it! That’s pretty rare in my experience. I’ve now had three artist cuts and six songs signed for TV/film. And here’s the last thing I want to say. Clay and Marty are lovely human beings. They’re genuine. They care. They go out of their way to help. They’re the real deal, and I’ll be eternally grateful to them for teaching me how to be a better songwriter.

I highly recommend both the lyric and melody master classes. I was able to take them simultaneously and found they complimented each other in many ways. My biggest takeaway from the lyric class is Marty’s focus on a blueprint for a song. It helps focuses every aspect of the story. Clay’s melody class adds tools to your melody tool box that you may not have considered before, and also gives you a common language to describe techniques you may already be using. The other participants in the sessions were supportive and offer opportunities for future collaborations. These are great classes with something to offer whether you’re just starting out or already have some songwriting chops.

I found Clay’s book on melody extremely helpful, but I am now able to put that information to better use, having taken Clay’s Melody Masterclass. Clay’s explanations and examples of the melody tools, and the opportunity to try them myself and get expert feedback, definitely helped me master these ideas and techniques, and use them in my own songwriting. Don't go another day without taking these classes. It is far too easy to spend years writing songs without knowing how to go from "another song" toward the direction of "a great song." These tips are not clouded in music theory--they are simple, direct and accessible--I could grasp them immediately and could hear the positive difference in my songwriting. Taking Clay's masterclass has shown me that I should never be afraid to try some new strategies and ideas to create melodies. Clay has spent years writing & researching hit song melodies (and still continues to do this) to up his game and to stay current. In his masterclass, he shares the result of his knowledge unselfishly with the rest of us and teaches us how to do our own research to up our own game, applying these learned strategies to real-life writing environments. While I am still confident in my ability to create melodies I feel that after taking the Melody Masterclass, my melodies are turning out more commercial, hooky, and memorable, which I hope will make me a better writer and attract more listeners.

All of the Master Classes are tremendous and really elevated my writing. This year I took Marty’s Advanced Lyric class and we learned how to push ourselves to get “over the wall” and bring emotion into our songs with which the listener can feel and connect. I won’t look at crafting a song the same way from now on…it was fantastic!
