How One Day Can Change Your Songwriting Life!

One day, I walked into Jason Matthew’s house with nothing going on in my career. I was afraid that my publisher might not pick up my option for the following year because I was deeply in the hole with them. I really didn’t have much of anything on hold, no cuts coming out. Nothing. Jason and I had been working on a song that we had started several weeks prior. By lunch time we had not written even one new line for the song. So, we went to lunch, frustrated. When we got back, Jason said “Do you like this song we are working on?” I said “No, but I thought YOU liked it a lot.” He laughed and said, “I was just working on it because I thought you dug it.” So, we decided to scrap the song altogether. Jason suggested that we write something that people could make out to. In an hour and a half, we wrote “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right”. It became one of the most played songs of the year. It put 3 kids through college. It was a game changer. Even if you have not experienced your “game changing” day YET, trust me when I say that, even if you have NOTHING going on today, tomorrow could change everything. That belief keeps me going when I go through dry spells. It helps me deal with frustration and things that fall through. I always believe that TOMORROW could be a game changer. Tomorrow could be the song that takes me to the next level, that pays off my house, or that allows me to get that writing deal I’ve been wanting. So, I go into every day prepared to work my tail off. I have a bunch of ideas stored in my database. I believe that I could write something TODAY that could change my life. Keep working hard and you could too! Write on! Marty Dodson
